about.
For my final university project, I was tasked with bringing my dissertation to life through a physical medium. The brief was wide open, and I saw it as a real opportunity to challenge myself creatively. I wanted to push the concept as far as I could and finish my time studying in Nottingham with something that felt considered, personal, and worth remembering.
process.
My dissertation explored the subject of propaganda, focusing on how its fundamental purpose has remained unchanged over time. I examined the parallels between contemporary and historical methods, showing how the tools may evolve, but the tactics stay familiar. From this research, the idea for a stylish and minimal newsprint began to take shape. It felt like the perfect medium - directly referencing one of history’s most powerful vehicles for propaganda, while giving me a blank canvas to approach the concept in my own creative way.
outcome.
The project came together as a visually striking and relevant piece of print work. Blending various styles of informative propaganda, it created a strong connection to traditional methods while reimagining them through a modern lens. It served as a blank canvas to combine classic newspaper elements with contemporary editorial design.
Examples of these crossovers would be the bold, newspaper-like typography in a more modern font, or use of memes, a lesser known but arguably just-as-powerful propaganda method, in an more retro, stamp style image, inspired by the newspapers of old.
The title was pulled from one of the most powerful references in the piece, reflecting the emotional manipulation that makes propaganda so effective. As someone who has a genuine love for print, holding the final outcome in my hands was easily one of the most rewarding moments of my creative journey so far.
key reference.
It taps into those deeply-held, visceral emotions you can’t even describe, all those biases you don’t even know you have, and it exploits them.
